Conviction for Copyright offences

Edward Elton successfully prosecuted Darren Hawken for four offences under the Copyright, Design and Patents Act 1988. In a nine-year period he had recorded many thousands of sporting events shown on Sky Sports, the BBC, BT Sport and others which he then offered for sale through his website, “” In that time he produced and sold nearly four thousand DVDs of sporting events both nationally and worldwide, and been paid more than £107,000.

When his flat was searched two Sky+ HD boxes, 5 external hard drives, a DVD re-writer and over 3,800 DVDS were seized. All of the illegal DVDs and all of the recording equipment has now been forfeited.

The defendant was sentenced at Newport (IoW) Crown Court to 18 months imprisonment for each count, concurrent. Confiscation proceedings are ongoing.
