A 75-year old man pleaded guilty to various counts and proceeded to trial on those remaining. The offences took place between 1976 and 2003. Following a one-week trial the jury found him guilty of three further allegations and he was duly sentenced to a total of 18 years’ imprisonment, with the addition of three extended licence periods, each of one year.

The learned Judge when sentencing said: “You have been found guilty of, or have pleaded guilty to, wicked offences. Instead of protecting the complainant, you groomed and deliberately targeted her as a young child. Her suffering has spread to her family. That is the effect your activities have had. They should not reproach themselves for one moment. They trusted you themselves, just as the complainant did, and you abused that trust.”
