Taxi Licensing- relevance of previous convictions - proper approach of "spent" convictions
 LLR 531 - Costs in firearms licensing cases; proper approach to be taken when revocation follows acquittal in criminal proceedings
Firearms licensing - meaning of "residence" within 26 Firearms Act 1968- LLR 544
Advice, drafting, seminars, training and advocacy in all areas of licensing law including:
(i) alcohol (including clubs);
(ii) regulated entertainment;
(iii) late night refreshment;
(iii) sex establishments;
(iv) betting and gaming:
(vi) firearms and shotguns;
(vii) the Security Industry Authority; and
(viii) goods vehicle operator’s licences.
Appearances before local authority licensing committees and in the Magistrates, Crown and High Courts. Regularly lectures local authorities and police forces on licensing law, practice and procedures, particularly the provisions of the Licensing Act 2003. Regularly acts for large national retailers and pub chains.
Entertainment: Extensive advisory and advocacy work in all aspects of alcohol and entertainment licensing (including large-scale outdoor events and festivals) before local authority licensing sub-committees, Magistrates, Crown and High Courts. Currently advising and providing lectures and tutorials to local authorities and police forces on the Licensing Act 2003, including preparation of and amendments to statements of licensing policy, sub-committee structure, the Human Rights Act 1998 conditions and other procedural considerations. Regularly instructed in review hearings and hearings consequent upon closure orders under Sections 160 and 161 of the Licensing Act 2003.
Betting & Gaming: All aspects of betting, gaming and lottery law. Recently acted for international online betting organisation setting up an operation in the United Kingdom. Lectures on the provisions of the Gambling Act.
Taxis: Substantial experience in hackney carriage and private hire licensing vehicle, driver and operator licensing. Regular advocacy in the Magistrates, Crown and High Courts. Substantial advisory work for local authorities on subjects including standard conditions, policies, demand and delimitation.
Firearms: Regularly instructed by police forces and certificate holders in all aspects of firearm and shotgun licensing including revocations, refusals and registered gun clubs. Reported cases in this area noted above. Currently writing the forthcoming edition of Gun Law (Shaws).
Clubs: Apart from licensing matters relating to clubs, has advised extensively on matters such as club status, constitution, gaming and lotteries run by clubs and the liability of clubs both to third parties and for the acts of door staff.
Advocacy and advisory experience in applications for and objection to sex establishment licences, including judicial review proceedings following the grant of sex establishment licences.
For the respondent - case involving an application to vary an existing licence for premises situated in the 'cumulative impact zone'.
For the respondent - case involving an appeal from the authority's decision to revoke the appellant's Private Hire Operators' Licence.
For the respondent - case involving an appeal from the sub-committee's decision refusing to grant a premises licence on the grounds of crime and disorder
