The defendant owned a huge house: his father lived in the house with his wife, three daughters and the defendant, and claimed Housing Benefit. Investigation began after the defendant's father had died.

Eventually the defendant pleaded guilty and received a suspended sentence of 20 months imprisonment, suspended for 24 months with 200 hours of unpaid work.

At confiscation, Edward Elton secured the full amount of money fraudulently obtained and also secured costs of over £5,000 for the local authority which was prosecuting.
