Practice

Edward Elton's practice is divided between serious crime, including associated confiscation work, regulatory crime and motoring offences.

Crime

He is instructed to defend in cases covering all areas of serious crime. He defends in serious matters of fraud and other matters of dishonesty, including those of complicated or high value aspect; drug offences; sexual offences and all matters of violence.

He regularly prosecutes drugs offences, matters of violence and other serious matters for both the Crown Prosecution Service and the Revenue and Customs Protection Office. He has prosecuted fraud and associated Proceeds of Crime Act offences alone, or as a led junior, in which role he is particularly adept at reducing complicated facts into digestible schedules.

Courts Martial

He has defended in many Naval and Army Courts Martial, both here and abroad, in which he is assisted by his five years' experience as an Infantry officer.

Confiscation

He is highly experienced in confiscation matters arising from the Proceeds of Crime Act and the earlier legislation, including conducting detention and forfeiture applications. He is also adept at drafting Restraint Orders.

Regulatory Crime

He appears in prosecutions under the Health and Safety legislation and in cases brought by the Trading Standards. He prosecutes and defends in cases brought by DBERR and its successor DBIS, particularly in matters relating to company law and bankruptcy legislation.

He has appeared in Police disciplinary adjudications. He has prosecuted and defended matters brought by the Department of Work and Pensions and by Local Authorities in matters of benefit fraud and the like.

Similarly he has advised on Firearm's Act matters and has defended a number of cases brought by the RSPCA.

Motoring Offences

He has considerable experience defending offences under the Road Traffic Act, particularly matters of speeding, including s172 matters: drink driving offences and dangerous driving cases, including causing death by dangerous driving.

He is particularly skilled at mounting highly technical defences in the Magistrate's Court and the Crown Court. He is experienced in judicial review arising from motoring offences.
